Summary: In the analysis of the theme of rationality, John Rogers Searle highlights a troubling question:
the hegemonic model of thought and action in the western intellectual tradition is perniciously
instrumental and possibly obsolete in the face of contemporary understanding of the capacities
and mental faculties ofthe conscious and free human agents. This model, found in the panorama
of the intellectual constructions of important philosophers, locates rationality as a subservient
element to the desires and beliefs previously adopted by the rational agent. In Rationality in
Action, Searle seeks to identify and analyze the premises of this same model, which calls the
Classical Model ofrationality, and from which such premisses he promotes an accurate critique
of the current conception of rationality and its practical use of the way bequeathed by the
previous philosophy. From the theoretical context of Philosophy of Mind, which also implies
the application of a new instrument for the treatment of question, Searle advocates his theory
of action: a work that signals a new conception of rationality.
