Summary: The objective of this dissertation is to examine the question of discourse as an
image in Plato's "Sophist" dialogue (240 A-244 A; 264 A-D), from the discourse
of being and not being of that work. For a better understanding of the term
image, we choose to follow a chronological sequence to approach the theme in
which we intend to review the etymology that accompanies the term mimesis
and its correlates, from the specific sections of the Sophist. In other words, by
explaining the connection between the discursive and ontological realms, it is
believed that it is possible to present the notions of truth and falsehood
conceived by the Platonic perspective and thus to safeguard the very possibility
of doing philosophy. The hypothesis is that the philosopher related to the image
both in the ontological aspect as in the linguistic and epistemological aspect,
from the mimetic art, but they do not allow to establish a differentiating criterion
between the true and the false. The most used authors to achieve the desired
results will be Notomi (1999), Palumbo (2008), Marques (2006), Alves (2016),
Arêas (2013), Cornford (1983, 1935), Baktir (2003), Trindade Santos (2013),
Popper (2014), Groby (2007). Considering the need to interpret such dense
texts in the form of dialogue, we started to use the dialectical model and the
ideation (GILL, 1996) seeking to understand the philosophical problem in
relation to the question of discourse as an image.
