Summary: This dissertation investigates the role of representational theories in emotions, based on the approaches of Jesse Prinz. It traces the path taken by the philosopher from his original 2004 theory, through embodied evaluations, to the enactive revision of his approach proposed in 2018. The research discusses how Prinz initially linked emotions to representation and later reformulated this view. The analysis of Prinz's reflection allows for the exploration of problems and solutions related to the adoption of an embodied view of emotions, as initially proposed by the James-Lange sentimentalist approaches.
The study discusses how emotions thus understood can possess intentionality and how different emotions, such as fear and anger, can be identified despite somatic similarities. The discussion developed focuses on the individual-environment relationship and the representation of this relationship. To this end, an analysis of the interpretation given to mental representation in the philosophical tradition is presented, especially in the contemporary developments of this debate. Furthermore, the philosophical debate on emotions based on Prinz's theories is analyzed, exploring the implications of representationalist views for embodied emotions. This is done to investigate the theoretical role that mental representation plays in this context.
