Summary: The research addresses Isocrates' philosophy in the context of the 4th century BC, highlighting
his vision of education and rhetoric as instruments to face political challenges in Athens.
Isocrates is presented from some points of view that aimed to produce speeches that were not
just theoretical but influenced the public and political sphere of Athens.
Chapter II addresses Isocrates' contribution to ancient rhetoric, focusing on the epideictic genre.
Virtue, as defined by Aristotle, is central to understanding classical Greek society. Isocrates,
unlike the Sophists, sought to be a master of rhetoric and political advisor. He emphasized
eloquence as a fundamental part of teaching, but he also considered virtue as the ability to seek
and maintain superior goods and serve others.
Chapter III addresses the inauguration of the panegyric based on Isocrates' speech "To Philip".
The author highlights that Isocrates brought innovations to Greek writing, contributing to the
communication and preservation of Ancient Greek customs. The speech was written during the
Persian threat to Greece, between 380 and 390 BC, with the aim of calling for Greek unity
against the invasion.
The conclusion highlights the importance of the study for contemporary understandings of
rhetoric, highlighting Isocrates' innovations, the idiosyncrasy in his works and the evolutionary
dynamics of Rhetorical Art over time. The research seeks to emphasize the relationship between
Aristotle's rhetorical tradition and Isocrates' speeches, pointing to the fluid and adaptable nature
of Rhetorical Art as a cultural process in constant evolution
